Contributed by independent Producer Jane Callahan from Tralee, Co. Kerry, this short feature hears from musician Niamh Ní Chara about the creation of a suite of music celebrating place, culture, history and exile from an island abandoned to the seagulls and the silence.
November 2013 marked the 60th anniversary of the Blasket Island evacuation. Life on the Island had become unsustainable and the diminishing island community re-settled on the mainland and in America. A celebrated and artistic Island culture on the Blaskets became a memory. Composer Tadhg O’Fodhlú and concertina player Niamh Ní Chara commemorated this anniversary with a brand new suite of music, “Suantraí na Inse.”
